Solid wood kids furniture isn't always the most expensive.
Just take a look at what's available on the internet for solid wood kids furniture. (Type "solid wood kids furniture" into your favorite search engine like Google, Yahoo, Bing or Ask.) You can find unfinished furniture (pine), Cherry Finish (which means plywood or particle board, "solid wood?"), Amish furniture (pretty good) and some actual solid hardwood (read thousand$ of dollar$),
Solid hardwood is actually quite practical for children's furniture. It is durable, safe and looks good. There exists many generations of experience in building solid hardwoods so they are typically very well crafted and almost indestructible. This makes them stronger for the rough treatment kids sometimes give furniture. Solid hardwood can be left bare or finished with only shellac and bees wax. Either way makes it safe for very young children who might "teeth" on it. Solid hardwoods are also very resistant to splinters. Of course, my special interest is toy storage. I was disappointed when looking for solid wood kids furniture because I didn't see any new functions of furniture. Occasionally you can find a bunk bed that has a play area underneath, or an easel that you can also crawl on or under. But traditional hardwood manufacturers don't seem to want to try anything new from the child's or the parent's point of view. Here is an example of a child using one of my solid hardwood One-at-a-time toy cabinets. As you look through the rest of my web site you can see what's available this portion of modern childrens furniture. What I personally like best about solid hardwoods is working with the wood. But that's another story. What you might like the most about solid hardwoods is the beautiful finish. The introductory photo to the video above is an example of Red Oak. Red Oak has a very definite grain that is still visible even when painted. Here are some more examples of One at a time toy chests from different hardwoods.
This is another photo of the Walnut toy storage cabinet you saw in the video. The dark color is NOT a stain, that's the natural color of Walnut.

Here is a detail of a Cherry solid hardwood toy cabinet showing the variations in grain that often accompany this hardwood.

This last photo is an example of a solid hardwood Poplar toy cabinet. At first glance it might look like Pine. However the Poplar grain is much finer than Pine and the wood itself is considerably harder and more dent resistant. Take your time in considering all aspects of your children's furniture. Should you choose solid hardwood kids furniture for your own children they will enjoy the security of having the same furniture for many years, or even generations.
