Why does childrens wood furniture leave us with such good memories?
Think back to your own childhood. Do you remember any childrens wood furniture? Do you remember the texture of the wood grain? How about the smell of unfinished wood? Or the smell of fresh polish on finished wood?
Remember the permanent marks on the school desks? (All those budding artists carving their hearts out!) My own generation grew up in the 1950s. At that time alternative materials were just getting started. They were usually cheap laminates. I seem to remember a lot of them coming unglued or falling apart. However solid wood furniture seemed to last forever. Young parents today may have rarely or never seen real wood furniture when they were growing up in the 1980s or thereabouts. What everyone called "wood" was usually either a composite with with a wood veneer or a plastic imitation with wood design or even wood grain. Their density, feel and durability are all different from real wood. If you had any wood furniture in your own room as a child it was probably painted. Real wood has many advantages for children's furniture. It is durable, safe and looks good.
